What do you call...

Yoni, cunt, beaver, pussy, twat…?

Language is a bearer of much more than the words we use. With some words follows values, both positive and negative. Some words have an individual meaning for each one of us. Its meaning can be linked to our upbringing or to specific moments in our lives. If the word is a sexual word, there are also different feelings and emotions linked to it, which can be felt consciously or unconsciously, positively or negatively.

The word “fittstim” (a Swedish word that means a shoal of pussys) for example was created by a union leader who was irritated by women who tried to make their voices heard within the union movement. Even though he made many tries to deny and explain why he put his words like he did, it mirrors a patronizing attitude towards women and the female sex. The way the word was used didn't only say something at a specific moment. It also mirrored an attitude towards women and how he valued women.

It's awfully common that women and men, boys and girls, use the word “fitta” (or cunt) in a patronizing way. It's even sadder when said by a woman, since she should be the proud owner of her cunt.

fit

Among many adults it's almost taboo to use words like cunt. They are seen as dirty words. We want to change that attitude.
Many times the person who uses different words for the vagina as curses may not really be aware of what he or she says. It's most common that children and teenagers uses words like cunt as a curse, and since they are still young we have the possibilities to influence them to se this kind of words as something beautiful, which symbolizes a beautiful part of a woman's body. Next time you hear somebody say something patronizing or cursing about cunts, tell the person who said it to explain how this is linked to the female sex. It's usually enough to pose that question to make them think… and maybe question the way they use the word.

We cannot find a better name for a woman's sex in Swedish than ”fitta” (cunt) in this context.
One of the reason is that “fitta” is not a paraphrase, it's a direct word. Another reason is to win the word back from those who uses it for cursing. Don't let them own it. Be proud of your “fitta”!
In another context, for example in medical care it may be better to name the female sex as vagina. And there are words that suit small children's sex. The most important things is that girls to get a name for their sex!
Many women didn't have a name for her own sex. That was a way to make her asexual and at the same time make her sex something to be ashamed about. It was so “dangerous” and “dirty” that it didn't even get a name.

We associate the word “fitta” to the life-embracing woman, we associate it with pleasure, sex, erotica and orgasm. Another name is Yoni, a Sanskrit word (Sanskrit is and old Indian, Hindu language which is used today only in religious settings.) Yoni is translated as womb, roots and source or more specific vulva.
“Fitta” is an old Swedish word, which means moist meadow. Most languages have their own name for the female sex in a context of pleasure. In other contexts one uses words like vagina. Here at Vaginarts we use vagina because it works in most languages, which is not the case with fitta (Swedish), pussy and cunt (English), coño (Spanish), fig (Greek), poes (Afrikaans). Vagina is universal - and art is the English (all internet users universal language) word for art and artistry, which is the result of human creativity and imagination and which presumes a relation and desire.
YYoni is somehow an international word, since tantra and Sanskrit is something that you can find all over the world. In Sanskrit Yoni refers both to the vulva (the outer visible parts of the female sex) and the vagina/womb (the inner and invisible parts). Behind Yoni is hiding other dimensions, especially since Sanskrit wasn't a language spoken by common people but was used to catch traditions, religious rituals and content. In Sanskrit every single letter has a special significance. And the letter for Yoni means:
Y
- Life, heart, the true self, union
O
- Maintenance, gleam, lustre, light
N
- Lotus, motherhood, menstruation cycle, nakedness, emptiness, pearl
I
- Love, desire, consciousness, to shine, to spread, pain and sorrow

Use the word that feels best for You to say. All names are permitted without consideration to guilt and shame, as long as it is said with respect. Vi cannot stop use words like for example cunt, just because some people's use of it has given the word a bad reputation. That would be to silently confirm the thoughts and ideas that lie behind a patronizing and negative use of the word.

So say it out loud - and with respect: CUNT!
